Cesar Chavez, a second-generation American, which was born on March 31, 1927, in Yuma, Arizona. He was a Latino activist, who fought for Latino civil rights. While he was a child, during the Great Depression his family was forced to become migrant farm workers after losing their farm. Throughout his childhood into his adulthood, he migrated a lot across the Southwest, working in the fields and vineyards therefore exposing him to the injustices and adversities that of how the farm worker lives were like. He only attended school up until the eighth grade, however maintained his ability to read throughout his entire life. He joined the navy in 1946. When e returned from the service he married Helen Fabela. In 1952, he joined the Community Service Organization (CSO), which was a Latino rights group. He served as the national director of the CSO. Then in 1962, he founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) and later changed it to the United Farm Workers (UFW), and in it, he helped encourage many Mexican Americans to fight the low wages, the exploitable dangerous working conditions, and most of all for their rights. He was well known for utilizing non-violent tactics such as boycotts, strikes, marches, protests, and fasts. Many of these tactics lead him to gain universal attention on the mistreatment and injustices of the Latin Americans.
